On Tuesday, 26th May, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) welcomed ‘Firefighter for a Day’ competition winner, 5-year-old Elijah to Port Talbot Fire Station.

Elijah’s dreams came true this week when he had the chance to step into the boots of a real firefighter. The special visit comes at an especially meaningful moment, as the Service proudly marks its 30th anniversary of serving the community of Mid and West Wales.

Elijah, a huge Fireman Sam fan, arrived full of excitement and enthusiasm. Accompanied by his grandparents and mum, he enjoyed a morning packed with hands‑on activities and unforgettable experiences.

During the visit, Elijah had the opportunity to ride in a fire engine, use a hose reel jet, see the Turn Table Ladder (TL) in action, make his way through the smoke tent and explore the station alongside the Port Talbot Red Watch. Neath Port Talbot Community Safety staff also spent time teaching him important fire safety skills for the home, ensuring the day was both fun and educational.

Elijah embraced every moment, impressing the crew with his energy. Adding to the excitement, mascot Fireman Sam and Sbarc made an appearance, giving Elijah an extra‑special memory to take home.

As MAWWFRS celebrates its 30th anniversary, events like this highlight the strong bond between the Service and the communities it serves. Elijah’s visit was a joyful reminder of the importance of inspiring the next generation and sharing the values that have shaped the organisation over the past three decades.

Massive congratulations to Elijah, he had the best day, and he certainly put the crews through their paces!
