Ammanford Fire Station have transformed an outdoor area into a flourishing wellbeing garden, creating a welcoming space where crews can relax, connect with nature and enjoy the benefits of growing their own fruit, vegetables and flowers.
The project was made possible through support received via the Welsh Government-funded Local Places for Nature scheme and has seen the station develop raised planting beds, introduce a variety of flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables, and create an attractive outdoor seating area for colleagues to enjoy.
What was once an underused outdoor space has been transformed into a vibrant and productive environment that supports both physical and mental wellbeing. The garden provides crews with an opportunity to spend time outdoors, take a break from the demands of the role and enjoy the many benefits associated with gardening and connecting with nature.
The project is a fantastic example of how a relatively small outdoor area can be transformed into something that delivers lasting benefits for staff wellbeing. It highlights the positive impact that teamwork, creativity and a shared commitment to wellbeing can have within our workplaces.
The Service’s Sustainability and Environment Manger, Jessica Millard, said:
“Ammanford Station crews have worked really hard and taken pride in developing the green spaces around their Station. It is great to see a plain understated concrete walkway transform into a green welcoming outdoor seating area, which can be enjoyed by the Crews as well as encourage and sustain a range of pollinators and invertebrate. It’s a reminder that even the smallest outdoor spaces can be transformed into a welcoming area, to take time out and enjoy the environment.”
Jessica continued:
“It’s brilliant to see so many crews across the Service area, keen and enthusiastic to improve their Station and encourage and enhance biodiversity through the funding available from KWT and Local Places for Nature.”
Congratulations to everyone at Ammanford Fire Station who played a part in bringing the project to life. We look forward to seeing how the garden continues to grow and develop in the months and years ahead.
