On Saturday, June 6th, 2026, Firefighters from across the UK will gather in Swansea to compete in the Welsh Firefighter Challenge, a regional race of the British Firefighter Challenge.

Held annually, the Welsh Firefighter Challenge brings together Firefighters from across the United Kingdom and overseas to take on a series of demanding physical and mental tests - all completed in full fire kit.  The event follows the success of last year’s challenge, which had representation from 23 Fire and Rescue Services.

The event is designed to showcase the exceptional skill, strength and resilience that Firefighters demonstrate every day.  More than a competition, the Welsh Firefighter Challenge is a celebration of community.  It’s an opportunity for Firefighters to support one another, highlight their professionalism and recognise their continued dedication to keeping people safe.

The challenge includes a total of eight trials, designed to test the fitness and determination of the most seasoned Firefighter.  Participants must complete a 50-metre run, a 50-metre hose carry, road traffic collision tool carry, a dummy drag and more.

The event will feature members of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s (MAWWFRS) Community Safety Team, who will be sharing important safety information and guidance.  They will be joined by a wide range of partners, including South Wales Police, Go Safe, the British Red Cross, Swansea Bay University Health Board, Guide Dogs Cymru, Swansea City Council, the RNLI and more.  The day will also highlight a number of exciting recruitment pathways within the Service, including On-Call Firefighter vacancies.  Attendees will be able to learn more on how On-Call crews operate and the training and development provided.

Alongside providing an exciting day for participants and spectators, the challenge also raises vital funds for the Fire Fighters Charity, which delivers specialist, lifelong support to serving and retired members of the Fire and Rescue Services community.

The Welsh Firefighter Challenge 2026 will take place at the Swansea Building Society Arena, starting at 9am.  Please note that while registration for competitors is now closed, spectators are warmly welcomed.

Event location: Swansea Building Society Arena, Oystermouth Road, Bae Copr Bay, Swansea, SA1 3BX
